Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention

About the role

The Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention leads the Fire Prevention Division, overseeing inspections, code enforcement, investigations, public education, and risk reduction programs. Reporting to the Fire Chief, this position is a key member of the department’s executive leadership team.

Key responsibilities

• Direct and supervise fire inspectors, investigators, and education staff, developing policies and strategic plans.
• Oversee fire code inspections, plan reviews for new construction and renovations, and ensure timely fire incident investigations.
• Develop and promote fire safety education programs and engage community groups, schools, and businesses.
• Assist with budgeting, resource allocation, and maintain accurate records of inspections and investigations.
• Serve in a command role during major incidents and participate in emergency response planning and training.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration or related field (Master’s preferred).
• Minimum 8 years of fire service experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory fire‑prevention role.
• Certification as a Fire Inspector and Fire Investigator; National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program preferred.
