Network Specialist

About the role

This Network Specialist position covers the day-to-day operation, maintenance and support of the Ministry/Department's network and connectivity infrastructure. The role includes troubleshooting, installing and commissioning equipment, applying security controls, responding to service desk requests and taking part in projects.

Key responsibilities

• Identify and resolve network problems according to agreed procedures, and help monitor and report performance using network management software and tools.
• Install, test, correct, commission and decommission networking and connectivity infrastructure, keeping accurate service and support records.
• Investigate minor security breaches, take corrective action and update security records.
• Apply and maintain security controls defined by the Ministry/Department policy and standards to protect against unauthorised access.
• Monitor service level metrics so that service level agreements are not breached.
• Carry out agreed operational procedures, maintenance and installation work on the network infrastructure.
• Take part in problem investigations and in implementing preventative measures.
• Respond to service desk and incident management requests and keep relevant records.
• Deliver training and learning activities to various audiences on technical topics and for assigned projects.
• Join project teams to identify and mitigate risks, ensure quality and manage assigned resources.
• Keep up to date with developments in computer networking and communications infrastructure and advise on their use.

Required profile

• At least three years of ICT experience, including at least 18 months operating and maintaining network, messaging and communications infrastructure.
• A recognised Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Information Systems Management, Computer Engineering or a related field.
• Ability to supervise technical and support staff.
• Effective oral and written communication, teamwork, conflict management and positive interaction with the public and external stakeholders.

Required skills

• Knowledge of networking and connectivity infrastructure components.
• Knowledge of project management tools and techniques.
• Some knowledge of the principles, tools and techniques for managing and controlling ICT within an organisation.
