Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention

About the role

The Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention leads the Fire Prevention Division, overseeing inspections, code enforcement, investigations, education, and community risk‑reduction programs. Reporting to the Fire Chief, this senior position is a key member of the department’s executive team.

Key responsibilities

• Direct and supervise fire inspectors, investigators, and public‑education staff.
• Develop and implement division policies, strategic plans, and budgets.
• Oversee fire‑code inspections of new and existing structures and manage plan‑review processes.
• Lead timely fire‑incident investigations and recommend corrective actions.
• Design and deliver fire‑safety education programs for schools, businesses, and community groups.
• Maintain accurate records, reports, and stay current with code changes.
• Serve in a command role during major emergencies and contribute to emergency‑response planning.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration or related field (Master’s preferred).
• Minimum 8 years of fire‑service experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role within fire prevention.
• Certified Fire Inspector and Fire Investigator.
• Completion of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program or equivalent advanced training (preferred).
